Hi there! For one of my summer trips, I visited the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont. The Trapp Family, from The Sound of Music, settled in the hills of Stowe after fleeing Austria at the start of World War II. There, they opened the beautiful Trapp Family Lodge Resort, which is, as they say, “A Little of Austria…A Lot of Vermont.” The lodge offers activities year round, and it’s definitely a wonderful place to spend a weekend. Keep reading for a full review of the Trapp Family Lodge!

Overview

Important Information:

  • Beautiful setting and mountain views
  • 10 minutes by car to the center of Stowe
  • Still owned and operated by the von Trapp family
  • Free wifi
  • Rustic, country inspired decor
  • The lodge offers rooms in the main lodge, 2-3 bedroom villas and guest house chalets
  • Outdoor activities – hiking, biking, tennis and more on the premises
  • Multiple dining options on, or near, resort

Main Lodge

The Lodge is nicely decorated and is welcoming for guests. Each floor has “living rooms” for guests to enjoy, and there are also beautiful decks and balconies to take in the views of the surrounding mountains. Personally, I think that the main lodge feels like Europe in the early 1900s – or what I imagine 1900s Europe to feel like. The decorations and color scheme all feel very Austrian, yet also rustic-Vermont.

Most guests at the lodge are probably there, in part, due to their love for The Sound of Music, and to learn more about the von Trapp family history. To help with this, there are framed posters, newspaper articles, photos, and memorabilia of the family all over the lodge. These pieces of art all contain information about the family legacy, and it gives the hotel a bit of a museum-y feel.

Rooms

The rooms in the main lodge are spacious, homey, and decorated in a country-style. There are also posters and photos of the von Trapps in the rooms that provide guests with historical anecdotes. At the lodge, and in the rooms, it feels a little like you’re going back in time. This adds to the 1900s European feel. The rooms are very clean, and ours had a wonderful view of the gardens and the mountains from the balcony.

Although I did enjoy the room, personally I thought it felt a bit dated. This is in part due to the dark furniture and the carpet.

Rates

When we visited the lodge in late June rates for a standard room were around $200 a night. That seems pretty standard for the hotel, and summer rates are averaging around $225-300 per night. Click here for the most up to date rates, and to book a room!

Amenities + Activities

Something that sets the Trapp Family Lodge apart from other hotels in the area is all of the activities that are offered on their estate. There are tons of activities and tours for guests – many of which are included in the nightly rate! There are hiking trails, maple tours, cow tours and more. Click here for the calendar of activities!

In addition to scheduled activities, you can also spend time walking throughout the estate, enjoying the gardens, and visiting the cows and sheep that graze near the road.

Food

The Trapp Family Lodge offers food options both at the Main Lodge and also at other locations on the property.

Main Dining Room

There is a dining room with outdoor seating at the Main Lodge that serves dinner and breakfast. The main dining room serves classic Vermont farm-to-table food with a European twist.

Bierhall

Just down the road from the main lodge you’ll find the brewery, that is open for both lunch and dinner. The brewery is modern and quite large, and features both indoor and outdoor seating. I highly recommend visiting the brewery, it’s a fun environment and the food is good!

Kaffeehaus

I was excited to visit the kaffeehaus for breakfast and coffee, however, it was closed due to Covid. Currently, the kaffeehaus is reopened – so I’ll be sure to check it out on my next trip!

Overall:

Overall, I enjoyed my time at the Trapp Family Lodge and would definitely recommend planning a visit. Although I did find the main lodge and guest rooms to be a bit dated, the decor is all part of the lodge’s charm. All of the hotel employees were very friendly and helpful, which made the trip even better.

There is plenty to do and see at the lodge, and it’s definitely a great place for all ages. I also love that even though you’re just a ten minute drive to the center of Stowe, the lodge feels secluded and private. Click here to book your stay!

  1. Such a super recommendation! This is going to sound so naive, but I had no idea the sound of music was based around a real family! A lovely review of their lodge, and thanks for helping me learn something new!

  2. We stayed here last Fall. Views are amazing! We did the history class with Maria’s grandson which was super cool! Also, Maria, Georg and other family members are buried by the lodge. They small gravesite looks just like cemeteries in Salzburg.
