Day 1: Explore San Salvador
Most travelers arrive at El Salvador International Airport, making San Salvador the perfect place to start your trip.
While many visitors head straight to the beach, spending one day in the capital gives you a chance to experience more of El Salvador’s history, culture, and food scene.
Morning: Historic Center of San Salvador
Start your day exploring the city’s historic center.
Top places to visit include:
- Metropolitan Cathedral
- National Palace
- Plaza Gerardo Barrios
- National Theater
- National Library (BINAES)
The historic district has transformed in recent years and is one of the best places to get a feel for the country’s culture.
To make the most of your time in San Salvador, I recommend a guided walking tour with a local!

El Salvador is famous for its coffee, so be sure to make time for a great coffee shop (or two!)

To really get a taste (pun intended) for the food scene in San Salvador, a walking food tour is a fantastic option! This lets you see the city with a guide and try awesome local restaurants. Another delicious option is to take a pupusa cooking class. Pupusas are the most famous Salvadoran food and you’ll likely be eating a lot of them on your trip. They are so good!
Evening: Stay in San Salvador
Spend your first night in San Salvador before heading to the mountains tomorrow!
While the Centro Historico is fantastic during the day and there is a ton to do and see, it’s not the best place to stay after dark. Because of this, I recommend getting a hotel in the vibrant Zona Rosa neighborhood. There are tons of restaurants, hotels, museums and great nightlife.

Day 2: Ruta de las Flores & Overnight in Ataco
Driving Time from San Salvador to Ruta de las Flores: Approximately 1.5–2 hours
The Ruta de las Flores (The Flower Route) is one of the most beautiful regions in El Salvador and a highlight of any trip through the country.
This scenic mountain route winds through coffee plantations, colorful towns, artisan markets, and incredible mountain scenery.
The route gets its name from the flowers that bloom throughout the area and is one of the best places to slow down and experience a different side of El Salvador.
Tip: The towns along the Ruta de las Flores are close together, making it easy to visit multiple stops in one day. The roads are winding, so allow extra time for photos, coffee breaks, and enjoying the views.
Stop 1: Nahuizalco
Distance from San Salvador: ~80 km (50 miles)
Drive time from San Salvador: 1.5–2 hours
Drive time to Juayúa (next stop): 15 minutes
Start your Ruta de las Flores adventure in Nahuizalco, one of the first towns along the route.
This traditional town is known for its indigenous heritage, artisan markets, and handcrafted goods.
Things to do:
- Browse local crafts at the artisan market
- Visit the produce markets and try traditional Salvadoran snacks & fresh fruit
Stop 2: Juayúa
Distance from Nahuizalco: ~10 km (6 miles)
Drive time: 15 minutes
Drive time to Rainbow Slide: 25–30 minutes
Continue to Juayúa, one of the most popular towns on the Ruta de las Flores.
If you’re visiting on the weekend, don’t miss the famous food festival where local vendors serve everything from grilled meats to tons of traditional Salvadoran dishes. If you’re okay with a local “street food” scene and less of a restaurant experience for lunch, then I definitely recommend this.
Things to do:
- Explore the town center
- Try local food from vendors
- Shop at the artisan market (although this one is not as great as the one in Nahuizalco or the shops in Ataco)
- Enjoy the coffee shops
Stop 3: Rainbow Slide (El Arcoíris)
Distance from Juayúa: ~15 km (9 miles)
Drive time: 25–30 minutes
Drive time to Ataco: 15–20 minutes
One of the most unique stops on the Ruta de las Flores is the Rainbow Slide!
Located in the mountains, this colorful attraction offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and makes a fun stop during your drive.
Visitors can:
- Ride the rainbow slide
- Take photos overlooking the mountains
- Enjoy the views
- Grab food or drinks
It is a quick and memorable stop that adds something different to your Ruta de las Flores itinerary. On the weekends, sometimes the line can be a little long, as this has gotten pretty popular.

Finish your day in Concepción de Ataco, one of the most charming towns in El Salvador. This was, by far, my favorite town on the route!
Ataco is known for:
- Colorful murals
- Cobblestone streets
- Artisan shops
- Local coffee shops & El Carmen Estate coffee farm
- Mountain/volcano views
Spend the afternoon wandering through town, shopping for local crafts, and enjoying the cooler mountain climate.
Coffee Experience: El Carmen Estate
No visit to the Ruta de las Flores is complete without experiencing El Salvador’s famous coffee culture.
Located just outside Concepción de Ataco, El Carmen Estate is a historic coffee estate where visitors can learn about the entire coffee-making process, from the coffee plant to the final cup.
Take a coffee tour to see how coffee is grown, processed, and prepared, and finish with a tasting of locally produced coffee.
The tour is a great way to understand why El Salvador is known for producing some incredible coffee while enjoying the cooler mountain climate and beautiful views around Ataco. They also have a very cute on site gift shop.
Overnight in Ataco
Staying overnight allows you to experience Ataco for longer than just a couple hours – which I highly recommend! I’ve said it before, but this is the town I loved most on the Ruta de las Flores trip.
Enjoy dinner in town and relax before continuing your trip to El Tunco the next day.

- This hotel is on the edge of town up a bit of hill! It’s stunning, has the most amazing volcano views and the on-site restaurant is delicious.

- Axul Coffee Artesanías
- This artisan shop/cafe combo is the best! The artisan items in the shop are some of the best I’ve found on Ruta de las Flores and the coffee and food at the cafe are great. They’re open 9am-6pm daily and have a fantastic selection on their menu.
- Casa 1800 Ataco
- This is a hotel on the edge of town, but it has a wonderful restaurant with incredible views. Have lunch here to see the stunning volcanos!
- Piccolo Giardino
- A great Italian spot!

Day 3: Ataco to El Tunco
Driving Time: Approximately 2.5 hours
After breakfast, leave the mountains behind and head toward El Tunco on El Salvador’s Pacific Coast.
El Tunco is the country’s most famous beach town and the perfect place to relax after exploring the Ruta de las Flores.

El Tunco’s biggest charm is the easygoing beach-town atmosphere. It’s very safe, walkable and relaxed.

Day 4: Tamanique Waterfalls Day Trip
One of the best things to do near El Tunco is visit the incredible Tamanique Waterfalls.
Located in the hills above the coast, this adventure combines hiking, jungle scenery, and natural swimming pools.
Even though the Tamanique Waterfalls are just a short 30 minute drive from El Tunco, you’ll notice it’s much less humid and hot than in El Tunco.
One important thing to note is that to visit the Tamanique Waterfalls you must go with a guide. You can drive to Tamanique on your own and ask for a guide at one of the tourism bureaus, or, the easier option, is to book a tour right from El Tunco.
Morning: Hike to Tamanique Waterfalls
Start early to avoid the heat.
The hike includes:
- Tropical forest trails
- Rocky paths
- Scenic viewpoints
- Multiple waterfalls
- Natural pools
Bring:
- Water (lots!! electrolyte drinks are helpful, too)
- Sunscreen
- Bug spray
- Comfortable shoes
- Wear a swimsuit
- If you have space in your bag for a light towel you may want one. I didn’t have one and it was fine. It was also raining, so a towel wouldn’t have helped much.
Just a quick note to say this hike is steep and pretty challenging with the intense heat and humidity. We are active young women and at times I was definitely out of breath. My very active 65 year old aunt did the hike as well, but the vast majority of hikers were in their 20-30s.
You can definitely do it at any age, but take your time and bring lots of water.
Swim in the Waterfalls
After the hike, cool off in the refreshing pools beneath the falls.
This is one of the best ways to experience the natural beauty of El Salvador beyond the beach.

Afternoon: Return to El Tunco
After your adventure, return to El Tunco for lunch and a relaxing afternoon. If you’re up for a little more adventure, now is perfect time to book a surf lesson! These lessons are usually a couple hours long. They are given by local surf guides and most meet right in the center of El Tunco.
Lunch Recommendations
After lunch (and maybe a surf lesson!), I recommend spending the rest of the afternoon by the pool or beach!
Dinner Recommendations
Day 5: El Tunco Beach Day
Since El Tunco is only about 45 minutes from the airport, it is the perfect place to spend your final day.
Ideas for your last day:
- Coffee by the beach
- Browse local shops
- Take another surf lesson
- I only recommend this if you’re staying the full day in El Tunco and have somewhere to shower after.
- Enjoy a long lunch
- Relax by the ocean
Depending on your flight time, arrange transportation back to the airport. If you don’t have a car and need to book transportation, here is a great option!
Whether you’re headed to the airport this evening, or the next morning, a last day in El Tunco is perfect before traveling home!
One thing to note: if you’re headed home in the afternoon, ask for a late checkout at your hotel/AirBnb. This is so worth it even if you have to pay a bit more as El Tunco is so hot and humid you will definitely want to take a shower before heading to the airport!
