Hi there! For state number 9 on my 50 state challenge I decided to spend the day in Stamford, Connecticut. Stamford is a great place for a day trip during the warmer months, as there are many fun outdoor activities for all ages. Keep reading for my recommendations and guide to the best things to do in Stamford, CT!

How to get to Stamford – Train or Car

Stamford is a city on the Long Island Sound located about 40 miles (1 hour by car) from New York City. I chose to drive to Stamford as I wanted to have the flexibility of easily moving throughout the city. Stamford also has a train station and both Amtrak and Metro North trains arrive and depart regularly. Although Stamford is about an hour from New York City, it is still very much a commuter city, so there are tons of trains that go between the two cities.

Where to Eat in Stamford

Roost

Roost is a super trendy and cute cafe in downtown Stamford! In addition to the adorable decor and design of the cafe, the food and coffee are really good! I had an avocado toast and a chai latte, and I highly recommend them both. The chai latte especially was one of the best I’ve had in a long time!

Stamford seems to have a bunch of lovely cafes – below are a list of others that came recommended, but that I did not visit on this trip.

Things to Do in Stamford!

For me, the best thing about Stamford is its beautiful outdoor space. There are lovely parks, beaches and nature trails to explore! Because Stamford, in my opinion, is more of an outdoor destination – I think it’s best to visit the city during the warmer months.

To note: many of Stamford’s beaches and parks require payment to enter and park a vehicle. The price for non-Stamford residents is higher than for locals, but this makes sense. Click here to read more about parking permits and rates.

Cummings Beach + West Beach

Stamford is a great place to visit the beach in the summer! Two of the most popular are Cummings Beach and West Beach – located quite close to one another. The beaches were nice, and when I visited they were almost empty – as it was only April. Even in the early spring they were a great place for a walk, and in the summer, they seem like a lovely place to go on a beautiful day.

When I visited Stamford it was in the off-season, so I did not need a parking pass/permit, however, during the summer months you will need to purchase a day pass to park at the beach. For non-Stamford residents, the passes are around $40 per car, which is a little pricy for an individual, but a relatively good deal for a family or group of friends. You can purchase these passes at the entrance to the beaches.

Cove Park

Cove Park is another wonderful area to be outside in Stamford. The park is huge, 83 acres, and is a great place for a walk, a picnic, or to go to the beach! Again, there is a fee to park at Cove Park during the high season, you can read more about rates here.

Mianus River Park

Another great place to enjoy the great outdoors! Mianus River Park has great walking, biking and hiking trails, that are suitable for almost everyone. The parking is a bit limited, but if you arrive early or visit on a weekday it will be easier to find a space. Parking is also free!

Check out Bedford Street

In addition to the lovely, nature-filled portions of Stamford, Bedford Street in the downtown area, is a great place to check out! Along Bedford street you’ll find shops and restaurants. On a warm day, it’s a nice place to enjoy a coffee or meal outdoors.

Stamford Town Center

If you’re hoping to do some shopping while in Stamford, you’re in luck! Located in the downtown area is a large shopping mall with a great selection of stores. If you happen to visit on a rainy or cold day, this is a good place to check out.

I hope you enjoyed my recommendations for the best things to do in Stamford, CT! Stamford is a nice little city, and one that is especially good to visit for its outdoor activities.
