Hello everyone! In today’s post I will be sharing my recommendations for how to spend an amazing afternoon in Biloxi, Mississippi. Biloxi is located on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, about an hour and a half drive from New Orleans. I visited Biloxi as a day trip from NOLA, and for me, an afternoon in the small city was the perfect amount of time. Keep reading for my tips and recommendations for a perfect day in Biloxi!
Mississippi is the 4th state I’ve visited on my 50 state challenge! Click here to read more about my travel challenge, and here to follow along on my adventures.
Activities
Check out the Visitors Center and Lighthouse
Located directly across from the beach, the Visitors Center is the perfect place to start your trip! The Visitors Center has interesting exhibits, and functions as a museum of Biloxi’s past and present. At the center, you can also find information on how to spend your trip in the city. I grabbed a brochure for a self-guided walking tour that seemed super interesting, but I ended up taking the train tour instead. Definitely stop at the Visitors Center to learn more about the city and to view the beautiful lighthouse!
Go to the Beach!
The beach is a wonderful place to begin your day! There are miles of beach available to visitors as well as ample parking! When I visited it was super windy, but it was still a nice place to relax and read my book. Even in March it was warm enough to spend time on the beach, although I didn’t go in the water.
Take a Train Tour
This train tour was the highlight of my trip! The train picks up right in front of the lighthouse and is a 90 minute tour of the city. During the tour Miss Carla, the tour guide, shares all about Biloxi and its history. She explains how the city was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina, and the recovery efforts that have been underway ever since. The train tour points out all of the major sites in Biloxi, that you can visit later in the day! The tour is $15 per person, and is totally worth it!
Mardi Gras Museum
This little museum is filled with tons of Mardi Gras costumes and memorabilia from years past. The museum employees are so friendly and welcoming, and this is a fantastic place to learn about Biloxi’s Mardi Gras celebrations. Admission into the museum is $8 for adults, and is definitely a must-visit in the city!
Note: If you like to gamble, there are also a bunch of casinos in Biloxi. I personally don’t enjoy gambling, but know that it is an option when you’re planning your visit!
Food
Greenhouse Biloxi
I visited Greenhouse for lunch, and it was so good! They have a wonderful selection of sandwiches and salads, and all of the ingredients were fresh and delicious. They also have wonderful vegetarian options. This cafe also serves breakfast and coffee, and I highly recommend checking it out.
Burger Burger
I didn’t eat at Burger Burger, but it came highly recommended by the tour guide on the train tour. This restaurant is known for serving burgers on po’ boy bread, so if you like burgers and po’ boys this is the place for you!
Weekend Trip
I visited Biloxi as a day trip, but it’s definitely a place that many people visit for a weekend or longer! Below you’ll find a map with hotels (and their rates!) in the area. You can also click here to check out more hotels!
