Hi there! Planning a winter trip to Vermont and wondering what to pack? Then this guide is for you!
In this post I will be sharing the perfect winter packing list for a trip to Vermont.
I grew up in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, so I am used to tons of snow and crazy cold winters. Now that I live in NYC, I try to get back to Vermont as often as possible throughout the year. Winter is one of my favorite times to visit, as I love to ski at Burke Mountain with my friends and family.
Burke Mountain is located about 40 miles from the Canadian border. It’s super far north and very cold. In the middle of winter, for example, the expected temperatures are somewhere around a low of -20 and a high of 30.
At -20 degrees, I will definitely be inside by the fire, but it’s still super necessary to pack accordingly for cold temperatures. This packing list will include lots of *winter* items, but I promise it’s still possible to be cute even when you’re all bundled up.
Since many winter trips to Vermont include skiing, in this guide I will also be including all of the necessary items you will need for skiing in cold, wintery weather.
Overview
The below packing list is ideal for 3-5 days, but can easily be adapted for a longer trip!
- Tops
- 3 cute sweaters, 1 skiing sweater
- 1 long sleeve top, 1 thermal top, 1 flannel
- 1 warm winter jacket
- Pants
- 1 pair of jeans
- 2 pairs of leggings and/or long johns for skiing
- 1 pair of snow pants for skiing
- Pajamas and Extras
- 1 pair of warm pajamas
- 2 pairs of ski socks + regular socks
- 1 pair of winter boots
- 1 hat + helmet, 1 pair of ski gloves, 1 scarf/neck-warmer
Packing Guide for Winter in Vermont
Sweaters
Sweaters are essential when packing for Vermont. They’re cute and comfy, and you can easily layer them for skiing, outdoor activities and relaxing at home.
In addition to a few sweaters, I also recommend bringing at least one comfy sweatshirt for skiing and relaxing.
Long Sleeve Tops
For the winter, I recommend only bringing long sleeve tops or flannels as it’s going to be way too cold for t-shirts.
You can definitely layer sweaters and t-shirts, but when it’s this cold out I always prefer to have long sleeve tops.
Be sure to also pack at least one thermal top for skiing, they definitely help keep you warm!
Jeans/Pants
For after skiing, while you’re out exploring VT, you’ll want to have a pair of jeans or pants. I always like to have a pair of jeans and a pair of black pants to pair with my sweaters.
Leggings/Long Johns
Leggings or long johns are super essential for skiing, as jeans won’t keep you very warm. Fleece lined leggings are a great option – they’re super warm and cozy.
Be sure to also pack your waterproof snow pants for skiing/snowboarding!
Pajamas
I recommend long sleeve pajamas, just because it’s so cold. Fun winter pajamas are a nice addition to any Vermont packing list.
Ski Socks
In addition to your regular socks, you’ll also want to pack a couple pairs of ski socks to keep you warm.
Boots
These will be the only shoes you need! Luckily, Vermont is a very casual state, especially so in the winter. I like to wear my Timberlands, but LL Bean boots are also a great option.
Winter Accessories
Be sure to pack your hats, gloves, scarfs and neck-warmers for skiing and other outdoor activities!
I also recommend bringing hand warmers for those cold skiing days! Check out this great reusable option!

Ski socks and sweaters are my favorite essentials to a winter vacation. So glad you included both on your list. I love reading other peoples packing essentials. It always help to inspire me for upcoming trips I have planned.
I would love to visit Vermont, but idk about during the winter – it definitely seems super cold!!
Whilst I love traveling in Winter, the cold really does get to me and so I always tend to over pack! This is a great packing list with all the essential items you need.
This is a great packing post for lots of winter places. My husband bought ONE hand warmer for our winter trip to NYC. My daughter asked him why, as he has TWO hands. So the 3 of us shared the one warmer. Not good planning!
I have been wanting to head to Vermont in the wintertime. Being a California girl I look for ways to travel to the cold rather than escape them! It looks like your packing list is perfect. I like all of the long sleeve tops and ski socks are definitely important.

The cold in Vermont can be brutal, but this list will definitely get you through it. I learned to ski at Burke and loved reading this list. It is all so true!
I legit HATE being cold so I’m always one to overpack and overdress for winter weather. I strongly recommend getting a pair of thick leg warmers. They make a huge difference in how warm I stay!
