Hello everyone! Vermont is beautiful year round, but March in VT is a weird time. It’s kind of Spring, kind of Winter, but mostly, it’s just mud season. Mud season is when it gets above freezing during the day, and the snow starts to melt and wreak havoc on our dirt roads – basically turning them into a muddy mess. At night, sometimes these roads re-freeze, leaving huge bumps and ditches all over the place. The weather during mud season is super unpredictable. It can be 60 degrees and sunny one day, 19 and snowing the next, and 33 and raining later in the week. Because of this crazy weather, packing for mud season can be difficult! Keep reading for my essential packing guide for Vermont in March!

Tops
For a Spring trip, I like to bring a mix of sweaters and long sleeve tops. It’s definitely not warm in Vermont in March, so I highly recommend long sleeve options. I usually pick items that feature spring colors, but are also warm. For one week, I recommend four sweaters and two nicer long sleeve tops/flannels. I’m also really into long sleeve crop tops paired with high waisted jeans and skirts, so I like to pack a few of those.
Bottoms
If I’m not planning on skiing, I usually don’t pack leggings. However, if you are skiing, or if you’re a legging wearer, definitely bring a couple pairs! I usually prefer skirts and jeans, and for a one week trip I usually pack two skirts to pair with sweaters and long sleeve tops. I will likely also pair these skirts with black tights. I also pack at least two pairs of jeans that match all my tops.
Dresses
Even though I usually don’t need to dress up for anything in Vermont, I like to have options. I also really like to wear dresses when I’m running errands or lounging at home. I find them to be super comfy + cute. For a week long trip, two casual, long sleeve dresses are perfect.
Pajamas + Lounge
Spring or winter pajamas work at this time of year. I like to pack a shorts + t-shirt set. I also always bring my favorite lounge outfit, shorts and a long sleeve top, – it’s perfect for colder nights.
Jackets
Spring days are still pretty cold in Vermont, and there is usually still quite a bit of snow. Because of this, I definitely recommend bringing a heavy winter coat. Even if you’re not skiing or doing tons of outdoor activities, this is the best option for being outside, especially at night.
Shoes
Because of the snow, I always wear my Timberlands in Vermont in the Winter and Spring. These boots match everything, in my opinion, and they are super cute with skirts, dresses and jeans. I highly recommend bringing boots to VT during mud season. Trust me, they’re a necessity.
Makeup and Toiletries
I try to only use all natural makeup and beauty products, as I find that many drug store brands use super harmful ingredients. Below are a few of my favorites!
- Pacifica face wash bar (vegan and toxin free brand)
- Acure moisturizer (toxin free brand)
- Pacifica makeup
- Native deodorant (toxin free brand)
