What to Wear in Morocco – Packing List + Guide

Itinerary + Temperatures

Summers in Morocco, not surprisingly, can be very hot – especially if you’re in interior cities such as Marrakech. Cities on the coast, like Casablanca, will consistently have lower temperatures. Even though Marrakech and Casablanca are only 2 hours by car from each other, in Marrakech daily temperatures will often reach 100 degrees, while in Casablanca, you’ll have temperatures in the 70s during the day and 60s at night.

If you’re planning to travel around the country and visit multiple cities, it is even more important to pack layers!

Local Customs – What to Wear in Morocco

A major question travelers ask when visiting Morocco is “how modestly do I need to dress?”

Most of the articles I read before my trip said that women should plan to have their shoulders and knees covered at all times. However, when I arrived in Morocco I quickly realized that a wide variety of outfits are acceptable (unless visiting a religious site) and in most cities you can certainly show your shoulders and knees.

This all being said, you should dress based on your own level of comfortability. It will be hot – and in cities like Casablanca and Marrakech it is absolutely acceptable to wear less-modest clothing.

Personally, I decided to still wear mostly midi and maxi dresses that would cover my shoulders and knees. This made it easier when touring religious sites.

If you’re planning on visiting the public beach in Casablanca, specifically, bikinis are 100% okay. You will find tourists as well as locals wearing bikinis, but you will also find many people dressed in more conservative swim/beach wear as well.

When packing for Morocco I recommend that you bring a variety of outfits and, once you arrive, choose what you are most comfortable wearing. Definitely bring maxi/midi dresses and skirts, as well as a sweater or shawl. But also pack a couple tank tops or shorter dresses to wear if the occasion and setting feel appropriate.

Carry-on Recommendations

I always try to pack in just a carry-on. I think it’s so much easier and it saves a lot of time at the airport. This packing guide includes enough clothes for a two week trip and everything you see will fit into a standard size carry-on bag.

In my roller suitcase I keep all of my clothes and shoes. In my duffle I have my laptop, camera, books, medicine and all of my toiletries that have to come out of my bag for airport security. I absolutely love this duffle bag! It fits so much, but also folds up to be super tiny when empty. This is the perfect bag to travel with and has been my go-to for many trips. It is also very inexpensive on Amazon and comes in lots of cute colors.

Outfit Inspiration + Recommendations

Dresses

I recommend packing five lightweight dresses and/or jumpsuits. Short sleeves are great, or you can pack thin strapped dresses and bring a shirt, shawl or light jacket to layer with.

When I travel I rely heavily on dresses. I love that they can be dressed up or down and they are an easy way to throw together a cute outfit.

Bottoms

When packing for Morocco in the summer I recommend linen pants, skirts and a pair of jeans/black pants. Personally I would avoid short-shorts, but that’s just a preference.

Shirts

Pack an assortment of short sleeve and sleeveless tops that can be layered. I also recommend a dressy shirt or two for nice dinners/evenings out.

This is my absolute favorite light-weight long sleeve shirt. It can be added to any outfit to make it more modest, and it’s also really cute. It doubles as a beach shirt as well!

Swimsuits

Morocco is hot in the summer so don’t forget your swimsuits for the pool and beach! In terms of swimwear, anything from bikinis to swim dresses are very common. I recommend bringing a swimsuit cover-up as well.

Check out these cute options:

Shoes

Shoes take up so much room in suitcases. Because I pack only in a carry-on, I try to limit the number of shoes I bring. Wear a pair of sneakers on the plane, my favorites are white Nike Air Force 1s, and pack a pair of casual sandals and one pair of dressy shoes. Neutral shoes are key so they match every outfit.

Bags + Purses

Again, purses take up a lot of space, so I recommend bringing one small, neutral colored, crossbody bag as well as one canvas bag to use for shopping/beach days. Canvas bags are great because they’re a sustainable option that take up almost no room in a suitcase.

    1. Wow thanks for posting this, or, actually creating a whole website on your beautiful experience! I actually stumbled upon this by asking Google “is there really a Rick’s Cafe in Casablanca” and you might be happy to know your website popped up pretty much on top. Well anyway I just wanted to say I really enjoyed it and you have a beautiful family. You remind me of a beautiful family I knew here in San Diego (Point Loma) who use to live traveling all over especially when the children were growing up visiting some fun locals. I was pretty lucky too as a kid we took some fantastic summer vacations with our travel trailer and motorcycles but all here in America. Well thanks again for this journey! Casablanca the movie is one of my all time favorites ever! I have it on Beta VHS Laser Disc DVD Blue Ray and own the stream on Prime hahaha! Ok have a swell day! 👍😊

  3. Really helpful to have your POV and know that some people do wear clothes that show their shoulders and knees. Still, I’m with you and prefer to adapt to local customs. 5. Those are some really lovely outfits! Thanks for all the tips! When I was in Morocco I got spat at by a man for wearing shorts that were just above the knee (this was 12 years ago).

  6. Thanks for sharing! It is definitely important to consider the cultural and religious norms when visiting a new location. These are some great options for what to wear, and they are very cute to boost!
